Chris Pine Talks “Star Trek” in British Esquire May 2013

With his movie “Star Trek: Into Darkness” nearing its highly anticipated premiere, Chris Pine pitched in on promotions by covering the May 2013 issue of British Esquire magazine.

While showing off his undoubtedly good looks for the Yu Tsai-shot front page, the 32-year-old actor chatted about everything from pressures of the first “Star Trek” film to taking on the USS Enterprise captain role.

“‘Star Trek’ scared me a lot. It terrified me, really,” the “This Means War” star revealed. “Because of the scale, the responsibility, the fact that it was this iconic character. It was the bigger challenge. So I had to take it.”

When discussing his audition as the famous Captain Kirk, Mr. Pine admitted, “I wasn’t a fan of ‘Star Trek.’ It didn’t excite me. All I wanted at that time was a part that I really connected to and when my agent said, ‘Star Trek,’ I said, “No! Have you not been hearing anything I’ve said? ‘Star Trek’ is the furtherest thing from what I want to do.”

In regards to excited Trekky fans, Chris said. “When I went to Japan for ‘Star Trek,’ the fans were at the airport waiting. But they didn’t scream until Benedict [Cumberbatch] got off the plane. And I was like, ‘F*** man: what about me?’”

For more on Mr. Pines interview, be sure to visit British Esquire and catch Chris in “Star Trek: Into Darkness” opening in theaters May 17th.
