Carrie Underwood has revealed she is fully behind the idea that everyone should have the freedom of marriage no matter what sex they belong to. In recent times, several high profile personalities such as rap veteran Jay-Z and reality TV star Snooki have spoken out in support of same-sex marriage and now the American Idol alumni has joined them.

In an interview with British tabloid The Independent, Underwood said: “As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry. I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

It should be noted that the “Inside Your Heaven” crooner has a very sizeable Evangelical Christian fanbase and she herself is also quite religious. In fact, her song “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” in which sings about her Christian faith has been one of her most popular songs.

So why is she supporting a cause that is traditionally considered a very non-Christian matter? The reason is that Underwood believes Christianity isn’t an anti-gay religion at all.

The 29-year-old explained: “Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

Same-sex marriage is expected to be one of the most crucial debating points of the ongoing US presidential race. Republican candidate Mitt Romney recently revealed that he opposes the alternative lifestyle, while the incumbent US President Barack Obama has taken the pro-LGBT stance.
